Moonrise and the Milky Way

I have recently started to photograph wild night landscapes under great starry skies. It's a big emotion to do night shooting sessions in these wild places. I always try to pour my emotions in these photos. To achieve the right feeling it's necessary to capture the low light of the stars with high ISO settings and wide apertures.
Here the first results of this kind of photography in a session in Pian Dei Resinelli, on the Grigna mount (Province of Lecco, Lombardia, North Italy). The set of my shooting session is a sloped lawn at an high point of the mount. Here, at night, in the darkness, it's possible to see the city lights...and the Milky Way in the sky (photo 1). The Moon suddenly rose from the mounts on the background. The yellow, bright rays of light are the perfect counterpart of the dark blue starry sky. It' a wonderful show of the Nature to see both the moonrise and the Milky Way togheter! (photo 2). When the Moon started to go up in the sky, the luminosity of the scene grew up, so it was perfect for another composition, where I used a pocket light to obtain a beautiful foreground (photo 3).

La Luna è sorta all'improvviso dai monti sullo sfondo.

Bravo! Beautiful starry night photos! An inspiring photo series.

A good idea to use the pocket light to illuminate the foreground. But with high ISO, I think you run the risk of increase in noise. Do you use a noise reduction software such as Noise ninja?

Hi! Thank you!! Yes, the noise level is generally high with such ISO with my D200, but when I watched these photos on my monitor I got surprised...The dark tones are free of noise and the sky has an accetable quantity of noise, which I could reduce taking down the lighter tones with a curve in Photoshop. The greatest problem at high ISO is the loss of color purity. But with the new camera models, such Nikon D300, D700 and D3...this is not a problem (even the noise!!). I sometimes use a plugin like Noise Ninja, but not in these photos.

Bye, Andrea

I have been working on different ISO settings for longer exposure photos at night. I have some good results, not too bad for my entry level Canon 400D. Thank you for this information, this is good help for me. Grazie!
